Content: Walkthrough of the SEMS+ app: force charging a battery, SOC limit protection, and reading the plant dashboard.

[00:01] Welcome to another Isaac’s video on how to use SEMS+. During your install, at the handover stage at the end, you would be set up by the technician on SEMS+. If you just go into SEMS+ you’ll see your plant.

[00:15] Now, the most important thing that we get asked all the time is: how do you force charge your battery? To do so, what you just want to do is go to Devices and click on your inverter.

[00:28] Once you’re in your inverter, you’ll see BAT 1. Click on that. Under the common controls you want to go to More Control. Now you’ll see four options: Parameter Settings, Protection, Immediate Charging and Battery Wake-up. The important one is Immediate Charging.

[00:44] Now, what you want to do: your charge is already set to 100. Then what you want to do is set your battery immediate charging power. So this is how you charge your battery prior to a storm, using the grid.

[00:57] You want to set that to about 50%. The reason why we say that is because if you were to charge it at 100% on a 10 kilowatt system, your drawing in 10 kilowatts to charge your battery off the grid, but then you’re also going to be drawing some for your load, which you’ll risk popping pole fuses. So, what we say is generally set it to about 50%.

[01:18] So for instance, this system’s a five kilowatt system. They’ve got two and a half kilowatts of charging power, leaving heaps of extra room for the grid use. And then just hit Immediate Charging. You’ll see it’s been successful.

[01:38] Now, if you’re wanting to not let it discharge overnight, because you might be doing it a day before, what you want to do is just go back. Protection. Go into Limit Protection. SOC Limit Protection. Just change the on-grid SOC lower limit to a hundred percent.

[02:00] What that is saying is: while you’re in on-grid mode, where you’ve got power into your property, then you will not be discharging your battery. So then if you were to have a sudden power cut, so off-grid, you will use 90% of your battery.

[02:14] However, the good thing about this as well is that what you can do is, by default when we’re commissioning your inverters, we set the on-grid SOC to 70% and then the off-grid SOC to 10%. That just means we leave a 20% buffer in case you lose power at midnight, to get you through the night.

[02:33] However, if you want to change this to, say, you always use 90% percent of your battery, just change it to 10% as well and hit the tick. You’ll see it comes up saying successful.

[02:54] What that means is that you will always use 90% of your battery. And we don’t recommend going below 10%. That just means you get better lifespan out of your battery.

[03:05] What we can also talk about is, if you go back to the home screen.

[03:32] Is the main interface of your plant. Now, what you can see is how electrons work: what you generate, so your solar, is first used on your load. Any excess is then moved to your battery, and then further from that you will export to the grid. And then you can see, by following the little green lines, what way it’s all going.

[03:54] Here, under Consumption Monitoring, you can see your total generation for the day. What you can see: it’s a pretty dull day in Hawke’s Bay today. To the grid you’ve had no export and it’s all gone to your load.

[04:09] You can also change it to say weeks, months or years. Or you can change the dates individually to see what it’s past done.

[04:21] What you can also see is your load usage. You can see on the same deal, if you change to the day or the month, you can see what you’ve used from the grid and what you’ve used from the battery.

[04:36] Here you have a power curve. So what you can see in this power curve is your load power. We withdrew quite a bit. And then you can also see that we brought some from the grid.

[04:47] Because we PV power didn’t quite generate enough to match our load power, so that’s when we’re buying from the grid. If it’s below this line, that means you’re buying. If it’s above this line, that means that you are exporting.
